Synopsis:

Join two dynamic speakers, Dr. Barry Glassman and our own Dr. Lou Chmura in what promises to be a very entertaining and productive day.

 

Our patient’s sleep patterns are clearly important in their overall health.  As a member of the sleep disorders team, dentists can and should play a major role in diagnosing and treating sleep disturbed breathing.  Our one day course will be a complete review of sleep medicine and specifically describing the dentist’s role.

·                  *Properly screen, refer and treat patients with sleep disordered breathing

·             *An evidenced based look at the role of occlusion and craniofacial development in sleep disturbed    
      breathing.

·              *Basic Sleep Medicine Principles which are key to understanding obstructive sleep apnea.

·              *The pathophysiology of the continuum of sleep disturbed breathing.

·              *A realistic view of the challenges that face dentistry in Sleep Medicine.

·                   *Understand the role of oral appliance therapy.

·                   *Comprehend the advantages and disadvantages of all treatment alternatives.

·              *How to determine if the growing child may be suffering from sleep disturbed breathing and how to
      
proceed to an appropriate diagnosis.

·              *Understand the role of growth and development in obstructive sleep disordered breathing.

·              *Appreciate the role of bruxism as a sleep disorder and implement appropriate parafunctional control.

·              *Obstructive sleep apnea-a problem with the airway or part of the metabolic syndrome?

 

Biographical Sketch:

 

Dr.  Barry Glassman maintains a private practice in Allentown, PA, which is limited to chronic pain management, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and dental sleep medicine.   He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, a Fellow of the International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics, a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management.  He is on staff at the Lehigh Valley Hospital where he serves as a resident instructor of Craniofacial Pain and Dysfunction and Dental Sleep Medicine.   He is a Diplomate of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and is on staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital Sleep Disorder Center as well as serving as the Chief Dental Consultant to three other sleep centers in the Lehigh Valley.  He is a popular and dynamic international speaker and serves as a guest lecturer throughout the year.  He hosts in-house courses on both Pain Management and Sleep Disorders and is a frequent speaker at major chronic pain and joint dysfunction meetings.  He speaks extensively throughout the year on joint dysfunction, chronic pain, headache, sleep disorders, and migraine headache. He was recently named Co Medical Director of the St. Lukes Hospital Headache Center and has made presentations to the Academy of Pain Management, the International College of Craniomandibular Disorders, the Academy of Orofacial Pain and the Academy of Craniofacial Pain on headache, chronic pain, and joint dysfunction topics.  He has had several articles on pain management and sleep disorders published in both peer and non peer reviewed journals.  His editorials have appeared in Cranio, as well as articles on joint dysfunction and altered chewing patterns.  He recent co-authored an article on Trigeminially Mediated Diorders of Migraine and Chronic Pain which appeared in Pain Management.

 

Dr. Lou Chmura earned his MS in Orthodontics from the University of Michigan in 1987 and has been in private practice in Marshall, Michigan since 1991.  Dr. Chmura has presented extensively on implementation and use of innovations in orthodontics (3D imaging, Soft Tissue Lasers, Sleep Apnea, TADs, Suresmile). 

 

Dr. Chmura has a special interest in systems and incorporating new technology (TADs, Laser, Cone Beam CT, Suresmile, Sleep Apnea) and diagnostic considerations (Smile Design, Sleep Apnea) into orthodontic practice. In particular, he is interested in how each of these disciplines impacts diagnosis and treatment planning and in how to organize the transition into using these new technologies in a busy orthodontic practice. 

 

Dr. Chmura has been actively using Diode lasers since 2005. He has earned Standard Proficiency in two Diode wavelengths and is the first orthodontist to complete Advanced Proficiency through the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He’s also the first Orthodontic Fellow of the Academy. 

 

Dr. Chmura has written numerous articles on lasers in orthodontics and authored a chapter entitled "Use of a Soft Tissue Laser in Orthodontics” in Principles and Practice of Laser Dentistry published June, 2010. Dr. Chmura presents nationally on soft tissue lasers, Suresmile and technology and hosts in-office courses and webinars for doctors and staff to systematically integrate lasers into their busy orthodontic practices.
